Direct instruction

Direct Instruction (Engelmann and Becker, capitalised DI) refers to a specific scripted programme. Lower-case 'direct instruction' is used more broadly for teacher-led, explicit approaches. DI has very strong effect sizes in research, particularly for at-risk learners.

A systematic, scripted instructional approach with high structure, rapid pacing, and immediate corrective feedback.
